V O L U M E 2 I S S U E 5 2 0 0 6 infant Infants can present with an enormous variety of conditions (TABLE 1) and despite their age can come from vastly different physiological backgrounds. Expreterm residents and graduates of the neonatal intensive care unit will present with many more challenges than an otherwise healthy term infant with an isolated surgical problem. In addition the practice of paediatric surgery is very broad based. However these infants share many similar physiological needs that require particular consideration in the postoperative period and it is these common topics that will be briefly discussed in this introduction to the subject. Most surgery on neonates for congenital abnormalities happens postnatally. Early communication between the obstetrician, neonatologist, surgeon and anaesthetist, as well as the nursing team involved in caring for the infant, is essential.

Surgical neonates need specialist medical and nursing care if their outcomes are to be improved. It needs a team of pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, pediatric anesthetists, and trained nurses. However, a key question in the management of these neonates is the place where they should be managed. A recent survey of neonatal surgical units in the UK in 2008 [1] revealed that surgical neonates w...
متن کاملPractical pain management in the neonate.
Neonatal care is advancing to levels where more neonates are now offered more invasive interventions, exposing them to more prolonged hospital care. Consequently, the provision of effective and consistent management of pain in these neonates has become a pressing challenge. Advances in neonatal care have not only increased the number of neonates, who are exposed to noxious stimuli, but, over re...
متن کاملNutritional status and clinical outcome in postterm neonates undergoing surgery for congenital heart disease.
OBJECTIVE Poor growth is a common complication in infants with congenital heart disease. There has been much focus on low birth weight as having increased risk of adverse outcomes following neonatal heart surgery. In this study, we examined whether preoperative nutritional status, measured by admission weight-for-age z score, was associated with postoperative clinical outcome. DESIGN Retrospe...
متن کاملThe Neonate After Cardiac Surgery: What do You Need to Worry About in the Emergency Department?
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital malformation, with an incidence of 6 in 1000 live births. Although many patients with CHD are diagnosed prenatally, more than one third of neonates with critical lesions are diagnosed in the newborn nursery, and up to 20% can present after discharge. These neonates can be at high risk of cardiovascular collapse at initial diagnosis as...
متن کاملPrognosis of Surgical Neonates
The prognosis and outcome of surgical neonates travelled across many phases of development of modern sciences. In past the prognosis of surgical conditions, as whole regardless of the age, was poor. But with the advent of modern anesthesia and intensive care units and involvement of new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities the prognosis is now on the move. Contrarily, surgical neonates are a s...
